5 Things About Wyomia:

  1. Wyomia is an Olympic Gold Medalist for track & field. She is the first person to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100-meter dash (in the '64 and '68 games).

  2. Tyus dedicated her 2nd Gold medal from the '68 games (for the 4x100 relay) to Tommie Smith and John Carlos who had been sent home for their famous and courageous medal-stand protest.

  3. She was born and raised in Griffin, GA, her athletic talents earned her a scholarship to Tennessee State University where she joined the TSU Tigerbelles women's track team.

  4. She has been inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (1976), the National Track and Field Hall of Fame (1980), and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1981).

  5. One of her notable quotes is " "I wasn't paid a dime for my track career. But participating in the Olympics gave me the opportunity to learn about different cultures; it made me a better person. I wouldn't trade the time I competed for anything."
